This third book in the series is just as great as all the others, maybe even a little more so. All the characters I've come to love are here as well as the introduction of J.L. Quinn (pretty please let him reappear). This was an intensely emotional story that ends with a bang. Art cricits are being killed off and it has something to do with an old crime handled by her late foster father. All hell breaks loose when a determined Mallory reinvestigates. We've gotten to know these characters so well by now that when Riker's past is delved into or Mallory is proven to be as destructible as the next person, the reader is there. The ending left a quite a blow and I couldn't wait to get my hands on the next one in this series (The Stone Angel). I really can't praise this series enough for it's deep character development, unusual as well as strong heroine and well written plots.

For those coming to the Mallory series take warning. Although all can be enjoyed as stand alone novels you will get so much more out of them if read in order. Plots are detailed, rich and full of nuance with wonderful characters who expand with each book in the series. Mallory is a wonderfully complex protagonist determined to win at any and all costs! My current favorite series. Enjoy!

Writing is very clever. I find myself rereading sentences or paragraphs just to trip on the rich and sometimes unusual wording. The cadence is terrific. Toss in the twists and turns of a great plot, and another O'Connell winner is at hand.
Not the best O'Connell title (Judas Child takes that honor, in my view) nor the best Mallory novel (I'd have to pick Stone Angel for that honor) but if you like the character and the series, you'll want to grab this one, too. I'm a little sad I've read them all now!
This book features an intriguing plot but it is undermined by serious flaws.First it is unnecessarily gruesome. Second, the portrayal of New York as a city existing only for corruption is overdone. Finally, the main character-Mallory- is unbelievable (no human weaknesses) and unpleasant (taking advantage of ethical behavior is neither clever nor admirable).
I fell in love with the Mallory novels when Ms O'Connell first wrote them some years ago. I am enjoying re-reading the first 6 or 7 and very much looking forward to reading the newer novels. She is a pleasure.
